President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a N15 billion take-off grant for its development.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the approval aligns with the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows the institution to operate multiple campuses across the country.
The funding, to be sourced from TETFund’s 2026 allocation, will cover critical infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential training resources for the new campus.
The decision to site the campus in Erinja followed recommendations from a high-level meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector General of Police, and the National Universities Commission.
Discussions at the meeting focused on factors such as student capacity, funding, academic standards, and the growing training needs of the Nigeria Police Force, especially as recruitment efforts expand.
The Presidency stated that the new campus is expected to enhance institutional governance, improve policing education, and contribute to national security.
Until now, the Nigeria Police Academy has operated a single campus located in Wudil, Kano State. The new Ogun facility will become the first additional campus established under the 2021 Act.
The Academy, which began operations in 1988 and later became a degree-awarding institution in 2012, offers programmes in law enforcement and related fields, including law, sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
The expansion reflects ongoing efforts to decentralise the institution and strengthen police training capacity across Nigeria.
