Confusion Trails Hosting of 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

Uncertainty has emerged over the hosting rights for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following conflicting statements from South African officials and the country’s sports ministry.

The confusion began after South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Peace Mabe, publicly stated at an awards event in Johannesburg that the country would host the 2026 edition of the tournament. She described the competition as a key qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place in Brazil.

However, the announcement was later contradicted by South Africa’s Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture, which clarified that no official decision had been reached. According to the ministry, Morocco remains the approved host nation, and any potential change would require formal approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as well as authorization from the South African cabinet.

The tournament is scheduled to take place between March 17 and April 3, 2026, leaving limited time for any host nation to make adequate preparations. Speculation about a possible change in venue intensified following reports that Morocco might step down as host, allegedly linked to tensions surrounding the men’s Africa Cup of Nations final. However, CAF has not issued any official statement confirming such a move, and Moroccan authorities have also remained silent on the matter.

South Africa has indicated its willingness to step in if requested by CAF, which is led by South African businessman Patrice Motsepe. Until CAF and Morocco release a clear and official position, teams, players, and supporters remain uncertain as preparations for the tournament continue.
