The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has reacted to online discussions regarding the death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who reportedly died from complications linked to a snake bite sustained on January 31, 2026.
The hospital expressed heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the pain and grief that come with such a tragic loss. According to the statement, the medical team understands the emotional weight of the situation and extends sincere condolences to her loved ones.
FMC Abuja explained that Ms. Nwagene was attended to immediately upon arrival at the facility. Medical personnel reportedly initiated emergency care without delay, including resuscitation procedures, oxygen support, intravenous therapy, and the administration of a broad-spectrum snake antivenom.
Hospital officials noted that clinical assessments quickly revealed that the patient was suffering from severe neurotoxic effects caused by the snake bite. While arrangements were being made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for advanced treatment, her condition reportedly worsened suddenly. Despite intensive efforts by the medical team, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency interventions, she could not be revived.
The management firmly dismissed allegations circulating online suggesting a lack of antivenom or negligence, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading. The hospital emphasized its continued commitment to professionalism, accountability, and high standards of patient care.
FMC Abuja also urged the public to seek information from verified and reliable sources rather than unconfirmed social media narratives, assuring that the institution remains open to providing clarification where necessary.
