President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 3,252 verified Parent Teacher Association (PTA) teachers into the Federal Civil Service to address staffing shortages in Federal Unity Colleges and improve the quality of education.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed the development on Thursday, saying priority would be given to verified PTA teachers who have spent years working in Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges without permanent appointments.
According to the minister, some of the affected teachers have served for nearly 25 years. Their recruitment will allow them to transition into the mainstream Federal Civil Service after completing the required statutory processes.
Alausa said the teachers were selected following a comprehensive verification exercise conducted by an inter ministerial committee. A total of 3,252 teachers were verified across the cadres of Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors.
The minister described the approval as a major intervention under the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the recruitment would help reduce teacher shortages and improve the teacher student ratio across Federal Unity Colleges.
He said integrating experienced PTA teachers into the public service would also preserve institutional knowledge, strengthen classroom instruction and improve learning outcomes.
For years, Federal Unity Colleges have depended on PTA funded teachers to fill staffing gaps caused by limited recruitment into the federal teaching service. Many of these teachers have reportedly worked for between 10 and 25 years without permanent appointments.
Alausa said the Federal Ministry of Education would work with relevant government agencies to complete the remaining statutory requirements for the recruitment in line with public service regulations.
He assured verified PTA teachers that the regularisation process would be handled with transparency, fairness and due diligence.
The minister also described the approval as a recognition of the long standing contribution of PTA teachers to federal schools, stressing that investing in teachers remains essential to building a stronger education system.
