The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has raised concerns over the sharp increase in cooking gas prices, warning that the situation could trigger public anger against gas station operators if urgent action is not taken.
According to the association, cooking gas now sells between ₦1,500 and ₦1,700 per kilogram, while a 20-metric-tonne truck costs marketers between ₦25.2 million and ₦26.2 million, depending on location.
NALPGAM President, Edu Inyang, appealed to the Federal Government to intervene and stabilise supply and pricing, saying the high cost is worsening hardship for households, food vendors, and small businesses.
He blamed the surge on supply shortages, high depot prices, logistics challenges, and rising operational costs, warning that many Nigerians are abandoning cooking gas for firewood and charcoal, threatening clean energy progress and public health.
The association also warned that prolonged price increases could worsen food inflation, job losses, and business struggles in the LPG sector.
NALPGAM called on the Federal Government, NNPC Ltd., NMDPRA, domestic producers, and other stakeholders to take immediate steps to improve supply, remove distribution bottlenecks, and make cooking gas more affordable for Nigerians.
