Anambra Police Arrest Officer Over Viral Shooting Threat Video

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a police officer who went viral after threatening to shoot anyone recording him while on duty, confirming that disciplinary action has commenced against him.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the command identified the officer as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Newton Isokpehi, attached to the Anambra State Command.

The officer sparked public outrage after a video surfaced online showing him threatening to “clear everybody down” if anyone filmed him while on duty. The video quickly spread across social media platforms before it was later deleted.

Following backlash, Isokpehi posted an apology video, claiming his remarks were made out of frustration.

According to the police, the command acted immediately after reviewing the footage and arrested the officer for investigation.

The statement noted that internal disciplinary proceedings have been activated in line with the ethical and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

The police also revealed that Isokpehi has undergone a drug test as part of efforts to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of the force.

He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any behaviour capable of undermining public trust.

The command assured residents that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public and that any officer found guilty would face appropriate sanctions.

It also reminded officers to remain professional, emotionally balanced, and respectful while carrying out their duties, especially in an era of increased public scrutiny.

The police further appreciated members of the public and civil society groups for drawing attention to the incident and encouraged citizens to continue reporting misconduct capable of threatening public safety and confidence in security agencies.
