The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in partnership with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has announced the rollout of a unified Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system to improve tax administration and service delivery nationwide.
The new initiative, introduced under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, makes it mandatory for every taxable person in the country to obtain a Tax ID.
In a public notice issued on Monday, the agencies said the system is designed to create a single, harmonised identity for taxpayers, allowing seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and state levels.
According to the NRS and JRB, the reform is part of broader efforts to improve transparency, simplify tax processes, enhance accountability, and reduce leakages in the nation’s tax system.
The unified Tax ID is expected to consolidate taxpayer records into a central database, eliminate duplicate records, and improve the management of tax-related information.
The agencies said the system will simplify tax registration, filing, and payments while improving taxpayer tracking, revenue assurance, and coordination among tax authorities across all levels of government.
They added that the reform would make tax compliance easier for individuals, businesses, and enterprises.
Under the new arrangement, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and organisations currently using the existing Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Validation API will transition to the new Tax ID system.
To support implementation, organisations seeking integration services for individuals, enterprises, and business names were advised to contact the Joint Revenue Board, while corporate entities were directed to work with the Nigeria Revenue Service for access to integration guidelines and API services.
