Power Minister Adelabu Resigns to Pursue Oyo Governorship Bid

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from his position in the Federal Government to focus on his governorship ambition in Oyo State.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu stated that his resignation will take effect from April 30, 2026, to allow for a smooth transition.

The letter, submitted through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve, noting that he stepped down with a deep sense of honour and gratitude.

Adelabu thanked the president for the confidence placed in him, describing his appointment as a privilege and highlighting his contributions to reforms in the power sector, which he said remains vital to Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation.

He explained that his decision to resign was to enable him fully concentrate on his governorship ambition in Oyo State, in line with provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which restricts political office holders from contesting elections while in office.

Adelabu also recalled that his political ambition dates back to 2016 during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, noting that he previously resigned from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same goal.

His resignation marks a significant political development ahead of the next electoral cycle, particularly in Oyo State, where he is expected to contest the governorship election.
