MTN Invests Over ₦1.6 Trillion to Strengthen Nigeria’s Network

MTN Nigeria has invested more than ₦1.6 trillion in network infrastructure over the past two years, as the telecom giant moves to meet the country’s rapidly growing demand for connectivity and digital services.

The investment, which began in January 2025, was disclosed as part of the company’s 2026 half-year financial results.

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Financial Officer, Modupe Kadri, said the continued rise in digital adoption has made network expansion and resilience a major priority.

The company now serves more than 92 million subscribers, with active data users reaching 55.6 million. Smartphone penetration on its network has also climbed to about 66 per cent, up from less than 55 per cent a year earlier.

However, MTN said improving network performance requires more than investment alone. Fibre cuts, vandalism, theft of telecom equipment and restricted access to network infrastructure continue to disrupt services and increase pressure on operators.

The company stressed that stronger collaboration between telecom operators, regulators and other stakeholders will be necessary to protect critical infrastructure and minimise disruptions.

With Nigeria’s digital economy expanding rapidly, continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure is expected to play a major role in improving connectivity, supporting businesses, expanding financial inclusion and powering digital public services.

For MTN, the massive capital commitment signals its long-term push to build a faster, stronger and more resilient network for millions of Nigerians.
