Anambra Court Sentences Onyeze Jesus to Six Years in Prison, Imposes ₦20 Million Fine

An Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka has sentenced popular native doctor, Onyebuchi Okocha, widely known as Onyeze Jesus, to six years in prison and imposed a ₦20 million fine after finding him guilty under the Anambra Homeland Security Law.

Justice Jude Obiora ruled that Okocha misled members of the public by promoting claims that he possessed supernatural powers capable of making people wealthy through unlawful spiritual practices. The court held that the defendant admitted appearing in the viral videos and operating the social media accounts used to spread the claims.

However, the court dismissed two other charges, including allegations of ritual killings and money-doubling activities, after the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence or credible witnesses to support those accusations.

Before sentencing, Okocha appealed for mercy, telling the court that it was his first criminal case and explaining that his wife, twin children, and several people who depended on him had suffered during his time in custody.

Reacting to the judgment, the Anambra State Government described the ruling as a major step in enforcing the state’s Homeland Security Law. Officials said the decision would discourage individuals who exploit spiritual beliefs to deceive people with promises of instant wealth while reaffirming that the government is not against genuine religious or traditional practices.

Meanwhile, Okocha’s legal team said it would obtain the Certified True Copy of the judgment before deciding whether to file an appeal. The case involving another native doctor, popularly known as Eke-Hit, has been adjourned until September 26 for further proceedings.
