The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out the policy separating Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) from Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) after revealing that more than 20 million pupils fail to progress beyond the junior secondary level.
Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa said the policy has not achieved its intended goals, citing a shortage of junior secondary schools and overcrowded classrooms as major factors contributing to the high dropout rate.
The government plans to present the proposal to the National Council on Education, while also accelerating the completion of UBEC-funded Smart Schools and other education projects to improve access to quality learning nationwide.
The move is part of broader efforts to tackle Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis and strengthen the country’s education system.
