BREAKING: FEC Approves Historic NYSC Reform, Civilian to Lead Scheme for First Time
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first comprehensive overhaul of the scheme since it was established 53 years ago.
The approval was announced on Monday after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Federal Government said the reforms are designed to modernize the NYSC and transform it into a skills-driven, productivity-focused institution that will support Nigeria’s economic growth and youth development agenda.
Under the new reforms, the NYSC will, for the first time, be headed by a civilian instead of a serving military officer. However, the military will continue to provide security for corps members nationwide.
The FEC also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to provide the legal framework needed to implement the approved reforms.
Other major changes approved include:
- A technology-driven call-up and mobilization process.
- Safer, risk-based deployment of corps members.
- A redesigned six-week orientation programme with greater emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and specialized career training.
- Skills-based primary assignments aligned with graduates’ academic backgrounds.
- Improved orientation camp standards through a national grading and certification system.
- A redesigned NYSC uniform and a graduation ceremony to replace the traditional Passing Out Parade.
- The one-year national service will remain unchanged.
The NYSC, established on May 22, 1973, after the Nigerian Civil War to promote national unity, is being repositioned to better prepare young Nigerians for employment, entrepreneurship, and national development while supporting the Federal Government’s goal of building a $1 trillion economy.
