Tinubu Seeks Tax Compliance as Obi Questions Revenue Growth

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to pay taxes consistently, saying sustainable infrastructure development depends on increased public contributions to government revenue.

Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima during the commissioning of Arterial Road N5 in Abuja, Tinubu said projects such as roads, hospitals, and schools require stable funding and improved tax compliance to reduce reliance on borrowing.

He assured citizens that government revenues would be used transparently to fund projects that directly improve lives.

However, former presidential candidate Peter Obi questioned the impact of the government’s reported revenue growth, arguing that rising national earnings have not translated into better living conditions for Nigerians.

Obi pointed to reports showing government revenue increased significantly between 2022 and 2025 but noted that the country’s debt profile also expanded sharply, raising concerns about fiscal management.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Nigeria reported improved business confidence in May 2026, with firms expressing optimism about economic conditions. Despite this, inflation remains a major concern for households and businesses, as many respondents continued to report rising costs and financial pressure.
