The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that it will on Friday arraign a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as Shameleon, over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider in Lagos Island.
Adio, 55, was arrested after allegedly attacking the dispatch rider during a scuffle on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on September 17, 2025.
Eyewitnesses reported that the clash began when the rider blocked Adio’s vehicle. The situation escalated quickly as Adio, joined by friends and colleagues, allegedly beat the rider mercilessly, sparking outrage in the community.
A video of the incident showed Adio repeatedly punching the rider, while another man joined in the assault. Witnesses said the victim was struck multiple times with a helmet and fists until he collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from injuries sustained in the attack.
Confirming the development, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, said Adio is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, and would be arraigned in court on Friday.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has also intervened, insisting that the suspect and his accomplices must face full prosecution.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, strongly condemned the incident, calling it “barbaric, shameful, inhuman, and heartbreaking.”
“As the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, I stand to say that the action by Shamsideen must be prosecuted to a logical end by the police,” Adedeji declared.
He also urged the leadership of the NURTW Lagos State chapter, led by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to suspend Adio immediately and distance the union from such “lawless behavior.”
“The NURTW should be a professional union and not a haven for lawless individuals who disregard human life,” he added.
The arraignment of NURTW leader Shamsideen Adio is expected to draw public attention, as Lagos residents continue to demand justice for the dispatch rider killed in the brutal attack.
