A 20-year-old phone and gadget seller, Olusola Olumide, has reportedly been arrested after a police sergeant was fatally injured during a stop-and-search operation in Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred along Olugbede Street in the Egbeda area of Lagos.
According to the account, police officers signalled Olumide to stop, and he initially complied. However, as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, Olumide allegedly drove off suddenly.
The sergeant was reportedly knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite efforts by police officers and passers-by to stop the vehicle.
Olumide was subsequently chased and arrested.
Sergeant Okediji reportedly sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding the incident and the outcome of the police investigation are expected to determine the next legal steps in the case.
