A 38-year-old man identified as Mike Oje has reportedly died after he was allegedly beaten by neighbours following a disagreement over his interaction with a three-year-old child in Mowe, Ogun State.
According to reports, Oje was hugging and playing with the child when the child’s father reportedly became upset and accused him of engaging in what he described as “rough play.”
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Friday.
Babaseyi said the disagreement reportedly escalated when some neighbours picked up a bamboo stick and allegedly attacked Oje.
The police spokesperson said Oje collapsed during the assault and later died from injuries reportedly sustained in the incident.
He added that the suspect allegedly fled the area with his family after the incident and was believed to be hiding at an unknown location.
Police investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify everyone involved and determine the appropriate legal action.
The allegations against the suspect have not been established in court.
