The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has formally terminated the services of his longtime lawyer, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, and directed him to stop representing him, his family and the group in any capacity.
In a letter dated July 22, 2026, Kanu said Ejiofor’s appointment had already been terminated verbally and that the latest correspondence served as formal written confirmation of the decision.
Kanu also withdrew any authority previously granted to the lawyer to represent IPOB, insisting that Ejiofor no longer has the mandate to speak or act on behalf of the organisation.
He directed the lawyer to stop issuing public statements, granting interviews, publishing social media posts or presenting himself as his legal representative or that of IPOB. Kanu also instructed Ejiofor to withdraw from any pending legal matters where he remains counsel on record.
In addition, Kanu warned against the disclosure or misuse of any confidential information obtained during the course of the legal representation, stating that any breach of client confidentiality could amount to professional misconduct and attract disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, as well as other legal consequences.
