The International Criminal Court (ICC) has removed its Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan, from office after finding him guilty of serious misconduct following an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.
In a statement, the ICC said its Assembly of States Parties voted by secret ballot to dismiss Khan under Article 46 of the Rome Statute after determining that he had committed a serious breach of duty.
The Assembly also called for respect for the privacy and rights of all parties involved.
Khan, a British lawyer, had served as the ICC’s Chief Prosecutor since 2021. Allegations of sexual misconduct against him first emerged in 2024, but he consistently denied any wrongdoing.
He was suspended from office in June 2026 to allow an independent investigation, which ultimately led to his removal.
The decision marks a significant leadership change at the ICC as the court moves to appoint a new chief prosecutor.
