FG to Issue N729 Billion Power Sector Bond to Reduce Electricity Debt

The Federal Government is set to issue a second bond worth about N729 billion under the Presidential Power Sector Debt Reduction Programme (PPSDRP) to clear verified debts owed to electricity generation companies (Gencos) and improve liquidity in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

Ahead of the issuance, the government will hold an investors’ forum on Tuesday, July 21, to engage potential investors. The new bond follows a N501 billion issuance in January 2026, bringing the first phase of the programme to about N1.23 trillion.

According to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), the January bond’s first coupon and principal repayment were settled on schedule, demonstrating the government’s commitment to meeting its obligations and boosting investor confidence.

NBET said the new issuance is part of the broader N4 trillion debt reduction programme approved by President Bola Tinubu to resolve legacy debts, improve market liquidity, and strengthen the financial stability of Nigeria’s power sector.
