Danish footballer Christian Eriksen has regained consciousness and is in stable condition after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly match against Ukraine.
The incident occurred around the 65th minute of the game on Sunday, causing concern among players and fans as the midfielder suddenly fell to the ground. Danish and Ukrainian players quickly formed a protective circle around him while medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to provide treatment.
In a statement shared on X, the Danish Football Federation confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and “doing well under the circumstances,” adding that the match was called off as a result of the incident. Denmark had been leading 2-1 before play was abandoned.
Team doctor Morten Boesen later revealed that Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but regained it quickly and was responsive shortly after medical intervention. According to Boesen, the midfielder’s implanted heart device appeared to function properly during the incident.
“Christian is doing well and walked from the field himself,” Boesen said, adding that the player had asked him to reassure teammates that he was okay. Further medical examinations were conducted to determine the cause of the collapse.
The incident marks the second time in five years that Eriksen has collapsed during a football match. In 2021, he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship clash against Finland and received emergency treatment on the pitch before later being fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to help regulate dangerous heart rhythms.
Denmark’s medical team said on Monday that Eriksen is in “good spirits,” recovering well, and expected to be discharged from the hospital soon. He is currently resting with family while doctors continue monitoring his condition.
