Retired Police Officers Protest at Presidential Villa Over Pension Scheme

Retired police personnel and their families, under the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria, staged a protest on Monday at one of the gates of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, demanding urgent action on their welfare.

The protesters called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which they described as unfair and harmful to retired officers. Many carried placards with messages such as “End CPS” and questioned why other security agencies had been exempted while police officers remained under the scheme.

According to the group, the protest was aimed at urging President Bola Tinubu to sign into law the Police Exit Bill passed by the National Assembly in December 2025 and forwarded to the Presidency in March 2026.

Some retirees expressed frustration over their financial struggles, stating that after decades of service, they are unable to meet basic needs or adequately care for their families. They described the current pension structure as inadequate and called for immediate reforms.

The National Coordinator of the forum, CSP Raphael Irowainu (retd), said the group’s primary demand is for the President to assent to the bill, which would remove police personnel from the CPS, similar to other security agencies.

This protest adds to a series of demonstrations by retired officers in recent months, highlighting ongoing concerns over pension payments and the need for improved welfare for those who have served in the force.
