At least six state chapters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have suspended their congresses and party activities following the derecognition of factional leaderships by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party has been facing internal leadership disputes involving multiple factions, including groups linked to Nafiu Bala and David Mark, which led to prolonged legal battles.
INEC announced it would no longer recognise the factions or monitor their activities, citing a court of appeal judgment and a pending case before the federal high court.
In response, several state chapters—including Anambra, Sokoto, Bayelsa, Ondo, and Niger—have halted planned congresses to comply with the electoral body’s directive and ongoing legal processes.
Party officials in the affected states said the suspension is necessary to uphold due process, respect judicial authority, and avoid violating electoral laws.
Meanwhile, a high court in Katsina has also ordered a halt to all ADC activities in the state pending further hearings, deepening the uncertainty surrounding the party’s leadership and scheduled convention.
