The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a woman, Fatima Muhammed, in Maiduguri over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency.
The arrest followed a viral TikTok video in which she was seen using a ₦500 note inappropriately, sparking public outrage.
EFCC operatives tracked and apprehended her within the Maiduguri metropolis after the video surfaced online.
She is currently in custody at the commission’s detention facility as investigations continue.
Authorities say she will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The EFCC has repeatedly warned against the mutilation or misuse of the naira, stressing that such acts are punishable under Nigerian law.
