Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is reportedly considering leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the emerging Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as internal divisions continue to weaken the opposition party. Sources indicate that former Bayelsa governor, Seriake Dickson, is actively lobbying Makinde to join the new platform.
The move is gaining attention among party stakeholders, especially as dissatisfaction grows within the PDP over unresolved leadership disputes and tensions linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
At the state level, the PDP’s governorship succession process in Oyo has further exposed cracks within the party. Several aspirants have been screened, but insiders suggest that Governor Makinde may favor candidates aligned with his policy direction and governance style.
Meanwhile, the national crisis within the PDP remains unresolved, with ongoing tensions between Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike contributing to factional divisions across the party.
Makinde is expected to hold a crucial meeting with key stakeholders on April 8, a consultation that could determine his political future and whether he remains in the PDP or joins the NDC.
Analysts believe that any potential defection by Makinde could significantly reshape Oyo State’s political landscape and influence broader realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
