INEC Halts Voter Revalidation Plans, Orders RECs to Pause Preparations

The Independent National Electoral Commission has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to suspend publicity and preparations for the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise.

The commission had earlier scheduled the exercise to begin on April 13, 2026, as part of efforts to update the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections, with a phased rollout across LGAs, registration areas, and polling units.

In a new directive signed by its secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC instructed RECs to halt all activities related to the exercise and await further instructions.

INEC also announced that its meeting with RECs, initially planned as a physical gathering, will now be held virtually via Zoom, with commissioners advised to remain in their respective states pending further details.

The commission did not state reasons for the sudden suspension but expressed regret over any inconvenience caused.

The directive effectively puts the voter revalidation exercise on hold until further notice.
