The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians living in South Africa following rising tensions, particularly in the Eastern Cape Province.
In a statement released from Pretoria, the mission urged Nigerian nationals to exercise heightened caution and prioritize personal safety amid the evolving security situation.
The advisory recommends that citizens limit unnecessary movement, avoid interactions with unfamiliar individuals, and maintain a low profile at all times. Nigerians were also reminded to obey local laws and respect cultural norms within their host communities.
As part of preventive measures, the High Commission advised Nigerians to suspend social and cultural gatherings temporarily, avoid provocative statements on both social and mainstream media, and stay away from protests or demonstrations that could escalate tensions.
Citizens were further cautioned against the unnecessary display of wealth or flamboyant behavior, while also being encouraged to promptly report any security threats to local authorities when necessary.
The advisory also encouraged Nigerians to seek guidance and support from the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg whenever they are uncertain about safety procedures or local developments.
The diplomatic mission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of Nigerians abroad and urged full compliance with all safety instructions during this period of heightened uncertainty.
