Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has apologised to Nigerians over the recent widespread electricity outages, acknowledging the hardship caused to households, businesses, and key sectors of the economy.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the minister admitted that the situation has worsened living conditions, especially during the intense dry-season heat. He noted that schools, industries, and businesses have all been significantly affected.

Adelabu explained that the outages were due to factors largely beyond the government’s immediate control, including disruptions in gas supply and ongoing pipeline repairs.

Despite the challenges, he assured Nigerians that improvements are expected within two weeks, as repair works on critical infrastructure—particularly those involving facilities operated by Seplat Energy—are nearing completion.

He revealed that a dedicated committee has been set up to ensure gas suppliers meet their obligations to power generation companies, adding that better payment structures are also being considered to encourage consistent gas supply.

The minister acknowledged long-standing structural issues in the electricity sector, including reliance on gas-powered plants, financial constraints, and infrastructure limitations. However, he stressed that efforts are ongoing to stabilise the grid and restore reliable power supply.

Adelabu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s goal of increasing electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts before the end of 2026, describing the current situation as a temporary setback.

He expressed confidence that the sector would not only recover but improve beyond previous performance levels, noting that the government is committed to delivering better electricity supply to Nigerians.
