Students Escape As School Building Collapses in Lagos

Students and staff narrowly escaped death after a four-storey school building collapsed in the Ogba area of Lagos.

The structure, which housed Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College, collapsed around midday at 11 Adudatu Street behind County Hospital in the Aguda axis of Ogba.

Witnesses said the building gave way just minutes after students and teachers were evacuated from the premises, preventing what residents described as a potential tragedy.

According to residents, an elderly man in the neighbourhood warned the school authorities that the building might be unsafe, prompting the immediate evacuation of occupants.

Another resident said the structure had begun showing signs of distress shortly before the collapse, with cracks appearing on the walls and window frames falling apart before the building eventually gave way.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later arrived at the scene, secured the area, and restricted access.

Part of the property used for residential purposes remained standing beside the collapsed structure, and no casualties were reported as of the time of the incident.
