Senate Summons Ex-NNPCL Boss Mele Kyari Over Alleged N210tn Discrepancies

The Nigerian Senate Committee on Public Accounts has summoned former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited Group CEO Mele Kyari and his management team over alleged financial discrepancies totalling N210 trillion.

Committee chairman Ahmed Wadada said the decision followed unsatisfactory explanations provided by the company regarding its audited financial statements from 2017 to 2023.

According to Wadada, the investigation began in May 2025 after concerns were raised by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation in audit reports for 2019 and 2020.

The committee questioned an accrued expenses figure of N103 trillion recorded in the company’s 2022 audited statements, which covered retention, legal and audit fees but lacked detailed allocations.

It also queried N107 trillion listed as sundry receivables as of December 2023. Although NNPCL said part of the amount was owed by defunct banks and other entities, lawmakers said the company failed to provide a detailed breakdown.

The summoned officials are expected to appear before the committee to clarify the financial discrepancies.
