MultiChoice to Shut Down Showmax Streaming Service

MultiChoice has announced plans to discontinue its streaming platform Showmax after more than a decade of operation.

The company informed subscribers of the decision in a message sent on Thursday, stating that the move followed a comprehensive review of the platform’s operations.

According to MultiChoice, the decision is part of efforts to strengthen its digital strategy and ensure long-term sustainability in the highly competitive streaming industry.

The company assured subscribers that the service will continue to operate for now and that there will be no immediate disruption.

Showmax was launched in 2015 in South Africa and expanded across Africa, offering movies, series, documentaries, and sports content through internet streaming.

The development comes after French media company Canal+ secured regulatory approval to acquire MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv.

MultiChoice said further details, including timelines and next steps for subscribers, will be communicated ahead of the service shutdown.
