FEC Approves Demolition and Reconstruction of Carter Bridge

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has approved the demolition and full reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos.

The decision was announced after a cabinet meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. Minister of Works David Umahi said the bridge can no longer be rehabilitated and must be completely rebuilt.

The council also approved N5.6 billion for the engagement of specialized engineering consultants to handle the design and cost assessment of the new structure.

Carter Bridge is a major transport link connecting Lagos Island to the mainland and serves thousands of daily commuters and commercial vehicles.

In addition, the council approved six other large-scale infrastructure projects, including major highway upgrades across various geopolitical zones. The administration aims to complete and commission at least four projects per zone by May 15.
