The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Thursday conducted a search of the residence of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
The development was made public by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, who disclosed that operatives carried out the operation earlier in the day.
Reacting to the incident, El-Rufai’s legal counsel, Ubong Akpan, strongly criticised the move, describing it as unlawful and a violation of established legal procedures and fundamental rights.
According to the statement from his camp, officials searched the residence without following due process, raising concerns about the legality of the action.
The anti-corruption commission later confirmed that the former governor is now in its custody.
Reports indicate that El-Rufai was earlier arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) shortly after he was released on bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) the previous day.
Security sources say the arrest is linked to allegations that he unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The situation has generated legal and political reactions, with his representatives insisting that due process must be followed while authorities continue their investigation into the allegations.
