The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned of a possible nationwide strike over the continued collapse of the country’s electricity grid, saying power sector privatisation has failed to improve supply.
Speaking at a union conference in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero said electricity generation has remained around 4,000–5,000 megawatts for over a decade, despite increasing population and industrial demand. He described the situation as a major setback and called for a comprehensive review of the power sector.
The labour body criticised frequent grid failures, rising tariffs, and the current electricity billing structure, accusing operators of worsening economic hardship without delivering reliable service.
The NLC warned that workers may take action if reforms are not implemented to improve power supply and protect consumers.
