El Rufai Questioned by EFCC Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai was detained for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission following an invitation linked to an alleged multibillion naira corruption probe.

Investigators are examining claims raised in a 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which accused his administration of financial irregularities between 2015 and 2023. Lawmakers alleged that loans and public funds were misapplied and recommended further investigation and possible prosecution. El Rufai has denied the accusations, insisting that all borrowings were properly approved and used for development projects.

While the anti graft inquiry was ongoing, federal prosecutors also filed cybercrime charges accusing the former governor of unlawfully intercepting communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. The allegation followed remarks he made during a television interview suggesting he had access to monitored conversations.

In a related development, the Department of State Services reopened investigations into the 2019 disappearance of government critic Abubakar Idris, also known as Dadiyata. Security sources say the renewed probe is reviewing past evidence, although El Rufai has repeatedly denied any connection to the case.

Authorities say the investigations are ongoing, with no court date announced yet.
