The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed reports alleging that the Federal Government directed it to halt enforcement actions against sachet alcohol and small-sized PET bottle alcoholic products.
In a statement issued by its Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency described the claim as false and misleading, stressing that it had not received any official instruction to suspend its regulatory activities.
NAFDAC clarified that enforcement efforts targeting non-compliant alcohol packaging remain in place and that the agency has already begun removing products that violate its regulations, including sachet alcohol and alcoholic drinks packaged in PET bottles below approved sizes.
The agency noted that some manufacturers have started adjusting their production lines by discontinuing smaller pack sizes, recognising that the policy is intended to reduce minors’ access to alcohol. It cited concerns that a significant proportion of underage consumers obtain alcohol through these easily accessible formats.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring adherence to existing laws, adding that any change in national regulatory policy would be formally communicated through official government channels.
The agency urged the public, industry stakeholders, and the media to disregard unverified reports and rely only on information released through its authorised platforms. It also warned against the spread of misinformation capable of distorting public understanding of government policies.
