The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the brutal killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi Charanchi Quarters, Kano metropolis.
The attack reportedly occurred on Saturday afternoon, when assailants invaded the home of Haruna Bashir around 12:10 p.m., resulting in the deaths of seven members of the same family. The incident sparked widespread outrage and concern across the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the state police spokesperson, SP Haruna Kiyawa, said the arrests followed direct directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and were carried out under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori. He explained that intelligence-driven operations led to the swift identification and arrest of the suspects.
The individuals taken into custody were named as Umar Auwalu (23) of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters, Isyaku Yakubu, also known as “Chebe” (40) of Sagagi Quarters, and Yakubu Abdulaziz, popularly called “Wawo” (21) from Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters. According to police, the suspects were apprehended during a targeted sting operation conducted between the night of January 17 and the early hours of January 18, shortly after the crime was reported.
Investigators revealed that Umar Auwalu, identified as the alleged leader of the group, is a nephew of the deceased woman. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted that the same group had been involved in other violent attacks, including the killing and burning of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters in November last year.
Police also disclosed that several items were recovered from the suspects, including blood-stained clothing, two mobile phones belonging to the victims, and weapons believed to have been used in the attack, such as a cutlass and a club. An unspecified amount of cash allegedly stolen from the residence was also recovered.
The Kano State Police Command said investigations are still ongoing to uncover the full extent of the suspects’ activities and possible accomplices. The command commended officers involved in the operation and thanked members of the public for their cooperation and support.
