Edo Police Arrest Woman for Allegedly Selling Newborn Baby for ₦1.4 Million in Uromi

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a woman identified as Martina Dachung for allegedly selling her newborn baby for the sum of ₦1.4 million in Uromi, Edo Central Senatorial District.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, and followed a report by a concerned resident, Ebhomien Matthew Asibor, who alerted security operatives after uncovering an alleged child-trafficking arrangement involving the suspect.

According to the police, operatives from the Iruekpen Divisional Headquarters acted swiftly on the information received and apprehended Dachung. Further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects linked to the transaction — Matron Ighalo Grace of Eguavon Medical Centre, Uromi, and Oha Promise, who were alleged to have played roles in facilitating the illegal act.

ASP Ikoedem disclosed that the newborn baby boy was successfully recovered and is currently safe, while evidence confirming the payment of ₦1,400,000 was also obtained during the investigation.

The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating all forms of criminal activity in Edo State. He also urged residents to continue supporting the police by providing timely and credible information to help maintain law and order across the state.
