Sagamu Court Grants N5 Million Bail to Driver in Anthony Joshua Crash Case

A magistrate court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus sports utility vehicle (SUV) involved in the crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

Kayode was charged on Friday by the police on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence. The court granted him bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties. He was subsequently remanded in a correctional facility pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.

Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed that the case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for trial. In a statement, Babaseyi said Kayode, a 46-year-old male, was arraigned at the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 2, 2026.

The accident occurred last Monday when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and two of his associates collided with a stationary truck around the Sinoma area near Sagamu while travelling from Lagos. Joshua survived the crash with minor injuries, but his associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, lost their lives. Ghami was Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.

Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps attributed the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, while the Ogun State Police Command cited a tyre burst as the cause of the crash.

Joshua was later discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after receiving treatment for his injuries. The driver was arrested shortly after and subsequently charged to court.
