Fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) reportedly ambushed a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State on Friday night, abducting a serving general and killing several soldiers, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), according to a report by HumAngle.
The kidnapped officer, said to be a brigade commander, was reportedly leading the troops during the mission. If officially confirmed, this would mark the first known instance of an extremist group in Nigeria capturing a serving general directly from the frontline.
While insurgents have previously killed high-ranking officers in separate incidents, abductions of senior military personnel remain extremely rare.
As of now, military authorities have not released an official statement, and casualty figures remain uncertain. The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Onyechi Anele, has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident.
