A man has died after jumping from the seventh floor of an apartment during a raid conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at 1004 Housing Estate in Victoria Island, Lagos State.
According to reports, a joint team of EFCC officials and policemen stormed the estate in search of suspects allegedly involved in internet fraud, commonly referred to as Yahoo Yahoo.
However, Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the deceased — believed to be a short-term guest — was not among the EFCC’s targets.
“It was true. He was not even the target of the EFCC when he jumped from the seventh floor. We were told that he was not a resident but a guest. It is quite unfortunate,” Adejobi said.
He explained that following the incident, the EFCC team immediately withdrew from the scene and notified policemen attached to the Bar Beach Police Division.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was rushed to a hospital after sustaining multiple fractures. Despite being placed on oxygen, he later died from his injuries.
“He was taken to the hospital after he had sustained fractures and was placed on oxygen but gave up the ghost. We are trying to ascertain his identity. Once that is done, we will contact his family,” Adejobi added.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
