The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill seeking to revoke the international passports of Nigerians convicted of crimes overseas for a minimum of ten years.
Sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), the proposed amendment to the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act aims to protect and restore Nigeria’s global reputation, according to Channels TV.
Leading the debate on behalf of the sponsor, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi (Nasarawa South) described the bill as both punitive and deterrent, stressing its urgency and importance.
He noted that the measure would help discourage criminal activities abroad that tarnish the image of law-abiding Nigerians.
“Innocent and patriotic Nigerians face harassment at airports, visa denials, and constant suspicion simply because of the actions of a few,” he said.
“The green passport, once a symbol of pride, has become disrespected. That is nothing short of a national emergency.”
Under the proposed amendment, a Nigerian convicted abroad would have their passport withdrawn for 10 years after completing their sentence.
Supporters of the bill said it demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and would help rebuild confidence among international partners.
