AFCON 2025 qualifier: Libyan authorities hold Super Eagles hostage at Al Abaq airport
The Super Eagles were held hostage by Libyan authorities at the Al-Abaq Airport on Sunday night.
According to the Super Eagles media officer, Promise Efoghe, the team’s chartered aircraft was approaching its destination in Benghazi before it was diverted to another city, more than a two-hour drive from the original base.
The players and their officials left Nigeria for the North African country on Sunday morning.
The Libyan players complained of poor treatment by Nigerian authorities on arrival in the West African country last week for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matchday three encounter.
Nasser Al-Hadiri’s side lost the encounter 1-0, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring the decisive goal four minutes from time.
