Untouched N30bn Sparks Outrage as Bodija Explosion Victims Demand Justice
Victims of the January 16, 2024, Bodija explosion in Ibadan have renewed calls for fair and increased compensation after Oyo State Government confirmed that the N30bn Federal Government intervention fund remains largely untouched.
Affected residents described the earlier disbursement of N4.085bn as unfair and exclusionary, with some victims who suffered total losses receiving minimal support, while others with minor damage reportedly got far higher payments. Several tenants say they were especially shortchanged despite losing everything.
Community leaders and victims are now urging the state government to release the untouched funds without bureaucracy, revisit excluded claims, and compensate injured persons, vulnerable residents, and families who lost loved ones. Many victims say they borrowed money to rebuild and are struggling with debt, while others have yet to begin reconstruction.
Residents insist the issue is not political but humanitarian, stressing that the confirmed availability of funds should bring immediate relief and equitable redress to all affected by the disaster.
