Federal Government Confirms Release of Super Eagles’ AFCON Group-Stage Bonuses

The Federal Government has confirmed that all group-stage bonuses owed to Super Eagles players at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations have been released and are expected to reflect in the players’ domiciliary accounts within hours.

The Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, made this known on Thursday while responding to reports that the national team was considering boycotting training sessions or declining to travel to Marrakesh for their quarter-final clash against Algeria over unpaid bonuses.

In a statement shared on her official X handle, the minister explained that the issue had been resolved through coordinated efforts between the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). According to her, the collaboration helped streamline payment processes to ensure faster and more predictable disbursements in line with international best practices.

Uzoka-Anite stated that all bonuses earned during the group stage of the tournament had been fully processed and cleared through the required regulatory procedures. She added that a fast-track conversion process was introduced to accommodate the players’ preference for payment in foreign currency.

She further disclosed that the final stage of the payment process is already underway, with transfers to the players’ domiciliary accounts currently in progress. The funds, she said, are expected to reflect either on Thursday or Friday.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the team, the minister stressed that the welfare and morale of the players remain a top priority as they advance into the knockout stages of the competition. She assured that off-field issues would not be allowed to distract the players from their performance, expressing confidence in the team’s momentum and goal of winning the tournament.

The update is expected to ease concerns surrounding the Super Eagles’ preparations as they continue their AFCON 2025 campaign.
