ASUU Declares Two-Week Warning Strike Nationwide

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a two-week warning strike across Nigerian universities, following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced that the industrial action took effect from midnight, Monday, October 13, 2025.

According to Piwuna, the strike is intended to compel the Federal Government to honour past agreements and to address the persistent challenges confronting public universities across the country.

He noted that the union had issued an ultimatum on September 28, 2025, urging the government to take concrete steps toward resolving long-standing issues affecting the education sector. However, he said that no meaningful progress was made during the two-week grace period.

“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from 12:01 a.m. on Monday, 13th October 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive, as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” the ASUU President declared.

The union emphasized that the action became inevitable after repeated attempts to engage the government failed to produce tangible results.

This latest development raises fresh concerns among students, parents, and stakeholders, who fear another prolonged disruption in academic activities across Nigeria’s public universities.
